Venice

The unique city of Venice holds a magical appeal to the millions of visitors drawn by its maze of romantic canals and awe-inspiring architecture. A guided sightseeing and walking holiday, with an HF Holidays' leader, is a great way to explore this preserved medieval timewarp. Little has changed since the wealthy merchants built the most powerful trading city in Europe.

Cruising down the Grand Canal on a vaperetto you will be inspired by the fascinating churches and lavish palaces that line every inch of its banks. As well as visiting the most popular sights, including the great square of San Marco, the Doge's Palace and the Rialto Bridge, there is time to explore the narrow canals and quiet shady squares missed by many visitors.

The Rialto Bridge over the Grand Canal is perhaps one of Venice’s most famous sights and makes a great starting point as you begin to get your bearings. The Grand Canal is lined with lavish palaces, making the ferry ride to St Mark’s Square unlike any other. Here the Basilica di San Marco is familiar to millions with its Byzantine domes and spires. Standing apart, the campanile or bell tower is as much a symbol of the city as the gondola or the Rialto Bridge. Next door is the fabulous Doge’s Palace, once the seat of government for this ancient city state. The campanile on the island of San Giorgio Maggiore is a fine vantage point to view the wonders of the city, but other islands also make for fascinating excursions. Murano is famous for its glass blowing, Burano for its colourful canalside houses. Torcello was one of the earliest inhabited islands in the lagoon, but its glory faded and is now an intriguingly abandoned backwater, with the cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta an astounding reminder of its former splendour. Back in Venice, there are several fine galleries to ponder on art from the Byzantine to Picasso. An unforgettable wander through the narrow streets leads to the Scuola Grande di San Rocco, where Tintoretto spent 23 years decorating the walls. Before you leave you may want to seek out Bellini’s Madonna and Child with Saints. It’s a breathtaking work tucked away in the vast church of Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari.
