Days 1-2: |
|
Arrival in Charlottetown on Prince
Edward Island National Park (2 nights) where
walks across dunes, tidal marshes and mixed
woodland offer opportunities to see a wide variety
of wildflowers and birdlife including osprey. |
Day 3: We journey onto mainland New Brunswick
to French-speaking Acadia visiting Fort Beausejour,
site of the region’s last Anglo-French battle, and the
university town of Sackville, with its boardwalk
through a wildfowl reserve. We continue to Alma
(3 nights) in the UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve
Fundy National Park.
Days 4-5: We enjoy walks to Mary’s Point, home to
one of the most important shorebird migrations in
the world, and Hopewell Rocks, curious flower-pot
shaped rock formations sculpted by the mighty
tides - the highest in the world. We also wander
through the inland scenery of the national park,
through lush forests and wide grassy meadows
filled with wild strawberries and blueberries.
Days 6-8: This morning we take the ferry to Grand
Manan Island (3 nights). Here we enjoy a remarkable
coastal walk to the Flock of Sheep where we
experience the pounding surf from 400ft high basaltic
pillars, and a boat trip (weather permitting) to the
feeding grounds of minke, finback and humpback
whales and white-sided dolphins. Coastal walks to
the Whistle lighthouse offer plenty of opportunities to
view the island’s rich and varied wildlife.
Days 9: We enjoy a morning walk in the New River
Provincial Park past secluded beaches, looking out
for cormorants, common eiders and guillemots
amongst other bird species. We then travel to the
picturesque coastal town of St Martins (3 nights)
with its three mile long beach and historic
architecture.
Days 10-11: Enjoy walks along the unspoilt coastline
of the Bay of Fundy including the impressive canyon
of the pristine Big Salmon River and an evening stroll
along the beach to see the sea caves and the
harbour.
Day 12: Transfer to St John for our departure flight.
Day 13: Arrive UK
