On 22 June 1985, two rival runners, Bobby Shields and Duncan Watson, embarked from Milngavie, with their goal of Fort William far from their sights. This was the first West Highland Way Race, and the beginning of an annual endurance event.
The race will begin again this year, for approximately 70 athletes, at Milngavie railway station at 01:00 on 21st June, with the same objective, “to run, jog, or crawl!, “to Fort William leisure centre by noon on 22 June. 35 hours to cover 95 miles.
Bobby and Duncan’s initial challenge did not receive the individual accolades they had originally envisaged. After reaching Rannoch Moor, having completed 60 miles of the challenge, it occurred to them that their continuance with this challenge and its rivalry would destroy them both. In what must have been a great show of human courage and integrity, they made a pact to pool their resources and to run together. They completed their journey in 17 hours, 48 minutes and 30 seconds.
Though this record has since been beaten (the current record is 15 hours, 44 minutes, 50 seconds), the history of this race is not forgotten, nor is the camaraderie that this trail evokes amongst the many that traverse this route.
Join us on a much more leisurely journey along the West Highland Way. We enjoy the trail and its superb scenery at a much more relaxing pace, but with the same camaraderie of that inspired by the Bobby Shields and Duncan Watson. The West Highland Way is one of the most spectacular walking trails in Great Britain, and is a perfect holiday for anyone who relishes a challenge, without encountering long or steep mountain ascents. This varied route features such natural wonders as crystal clear lochs, rugged glens and dramatic fells, making this a particularly memorable trail.
Firmly established as one of our guests' favourite trail holidays, this superb walk winds its way from the outskirts of Glasgow, to the foothills of Ben Nevis at Fort William. Much of the Way features ancient and historic routes and our walks make use of old drove roads, along which Highlanders herded their cattle to lowland markets, the famous military roads built in the 18th century, old coaching roads, farm tracks and disused railway lines.
Each day we walk section by section of this outstanding route, led by an experienced and knowledgeable HF Holidays' leader, before returning to quality, comfortable accommodation at the end of the day's walk. Staying at carefully selected partner hotels, and our very own HF Holidays Country House accommodation at Glen Coe, you can expect warm hospitality, excellent Full Board accommodation and a relaxing atmosphere. We take care of every detail, so you can enjoy your holiday, hassle-free. Your luggage is transported for you to each overnight stop, so only daily requirements need to be carried in a small rucksack.
