Walking Holidays in Britain

What is special about a guided walking holiday in Britain?

Unlike most walking holidays you'll always have the choice of at least 2 guided walks, often 3, sometimes 4, each walking day subject to sufficient numbers choosing each walk - ideal for friends and partners with different walking interests. This allows you to alternate between the walks, perhaps progressing to something more challenging towards the end of your holiday.

How difficult are the walks?

We offer a wide range of holidays from the easiest rambles to the most challenging mountain ascents. Probably the most important thing to look for is the amount of ascent (in uphill) during the day.

What if I want to do easier walks than the guided walking programme?

We offer a huge range of holidays with easier walks - from Mountain Walks at an Easy Pace to Half-Day Walks, and small coach Rover holidays combining sightseeing with easy walks.

What if I want to do harder walks?

There are many to choose from based upon your interest and experience - from Ridges and Scrambles to Munro Bagging and from Winter Walking to the Ascent of Ben Nevis.

Do you have to walk every day?

If you don't want to walk on every day of the holiday, your best choice would be our Hotel Based walking holidays as you will be based in one hotel for the duration of the holiday and you can choose whether to go out each day. On the 'Hotel to Hotel" holidays, where you walk from 'Hotel to Hotel", if you are tired, just want a day off, blistered, injured or otherwise unable to walk, we will advise on getting to the next stage by bus.

What happens if it rains?

The walk goes ahead, although the Leader may change the route in the interests of safety if the weather is very poor. If you don't want to walk if it rains then you may prefer our Hotel Based walking holidays where you stay in the same accommodation for the week. Your Leader will always have suggestions on other places you could visit.

Who are the Leaders?

Our HF Holidays Leaders come from all walks of life but all share a passion for the great outdoors. Each holiday is accompanied by up to three Leaders who will lead the day's walks and ensure the smooth running of your holiday. Our assessment courses have a reputation for only selecting the best Leaders and only 40-50% make the grade. We don't just look for people with excellent fitness and navigation skills; we look for Leaders whose prime motivation is that all our guests have an enjoyable holiday.

What do I need to bring?

On all of our walking holidays all you need to carry is a light daypack containing your lunch, water bottle, waterproofs and any other personal items you might need during the day.

Do you have guided walking tours based in one place for the whole tour?

Yes, our hotel based walking holidays. In Britain we use our own comfortable Country House accommodation as a base for exploring the surrounding countryside. We provide transport to the walks each day when necessary.

Do you have guided walking tours staying somewhere different each night?

Yes, our 'Hotel to Hotel' tours, where you walk from 'Hotel to Hotel" with your luggage transferred between overnight accommodations.

What sort of people go on a guided walking holiday?

On our holidays there is a mix of ages, of new clients and 'regulars' from Britain and overseas, and of couples and people travelling on their own. This results in a relaxed, friendly atmosphere and some lively and interesting discussions during the walks and in the evenings.

How many people will be on the holiday?

Our groups are a nice size, normally around 15 per Leader. On some of the Hotel to Hotel tours where we walk from Hotel to Hotel, we usually restrict the group size to approximately 12 people.

How do I know if I'm fit enough?

To help you select the tour most suited to your fitness and walking experience we indicate the amount of ascent (uphill) and distance covered in a day, so that you can choose the one most suited to your fitness and previous walking experience.

What is the pace on your walks ?

This is set by the Leader according to the experience and ability of the group, but is an average to care for any slower members in a party.
