Vienna to Budapest
Cycling from Austria to Hungary

A fully guided 8-night tour from Vienna to Budapest, running
alongside beautiful lakes, pretty villages and forests full
of interesting wildlife. Take the opportunity to sample the
local wine and cuisine, and learn more about this fantastic
area from your knowledgeable and friendly guide.

Seven days of cycling with some uneven terrain. A follow
up van is available if there is a section that you would
prefer not to cycle, or if you wish to take a break
from cycling. |
Day 1: Arrival in Vienna
At 18:30 you will be welcomed by your tour
guide, and there will be a meeting in the hotel to discuss your cycle tour.
Day 2: Vienna to Bruck an der Leitha
32½ miles
Leaving Vienna, you cycle through the famous Prater Park and
along small roads and paths to the pretty town of Bruck an
der Leitha. The old part of this town is especially worth
a look, the baroque main square being hailed as the most beautiful
in eastern Austria.
Day 3: Bruck an der Leitha to Sopron
39 miles
Today you cycle via
Lake Fertö to Rust, famous for its wine and stork population. You
continue on, crossing the border into Hungary and stopping in Sopron for
your overnight stay. Sopron is famed as the only Hungarian town to have
its medieval centre almost entirely intact.
Day 4: Sopron to Bük / Sárvár
35 miles
Today you can enjoy panoramic views of Lake Fertö as you cycle towards Fertöd. At Fertöd you come to a wonderful baroque castle known as the 'Hungarian Versailles', where Hadyn worked as court musician for 30 years. You then head owards the final destination of Bük / Sárvár where you can relax in the healing mineral water at the thermal spa.
Day 5: Bük / Sárvár to Magyarpolány
41 miles
Today you start the tour
through the former estate of the noble Esterházy family. In Magyarpolány,
you dismount and can climb the 150 stone steps up Calvary Hill to the
chapel at the top for wonderful views of this pretty village. Enjoy a
traditional Hungarian meal tonight in the local inn, before going to your
accommodation in local guesthouses.
Day 6: Magyarpolány to Keszthely
39 miles
Today, the cycle path takes you through a number of small and sleepy Hungarian villages. Your next stop is Héviz, a health resort boasting the largest
natural thermal lake in Europe. Enjoy a walk through the nature reserve
here, before continuing to your overnight stop at Keszthely.
Day 7: Keszthely
19 miles
This morning's programme is slightly flexible and there are
a number of activities you can choose from. You could stroll
through the park near the Festetics castle, or visit the thermal
baths at Lake Héviz. Alternatively you could opt for
a swim in Lake Balaton or a walk through the beautiful park.
Around 15:30 your guide will take you on a bike tour, which
offers panoramic views of Lake Balaton and spectacular volcanic
hillsides. You return to Keszthely for your overnight stay
and you can enjoy a wine tasting with your dinner this evening.
Day 8: Keszthely to Budapest
36 miles
Cycle along the southern side of Lake Balaton passing through pretty lakeside villages and a lovely nature reserve to Balatonföldvar. Your transfer bus will take you to Budapest, the 'Pearl of the Danube'. After dinner, enjoy a tour with your guide of the city by night.
Day 9: End of tour after breakfast

You will stay in double or twin rooms in comfortable hotel accommodation,
8 nights with private facilities.
Your luggage is transported to each overnight stop for you along
the route, so you can relax and enjoy the cycling.
Your accommodation is Half Board. A picnic lunch for a supplement of €11 or around £9 per day payable locally to your tour guide. They will accept Hungarian Forints, British pounds and US Dollars. This service is recommended due to the rural location of the lunch spots.
