Northumberland

Vibrant fishing villages. England’s finest beaches. Soothing. The Cheviot Hills and the Simonsides. Huge medieval castles. Holy Island. Freshly caught fish. The sights, smells and tastes of Northumberland can’t be matched.

England's North Country is famous for the beauty of its scenery, magnificent coasts with sweeping sandy beaches, punctuated by fishing villages and imposing castles.

Our guided Classic Walking holidays will take you deep into the isolated Cheviot Hills, help you to experience the steep-sided Simonside Hills and allow you to enjoy the lovely Northumberland coast. This is true border country with an impressive legacy of castles to discover - Dunstanburgh, Bamburgh, Alnwick and Warkworth, whilst Hadrian's Wall is one of only 26 World Heritage Sites.

  • Away from it all beauty of Northumberland
  • Excellent coastal location in historic Alnmouth
  • Shorter, half-day walks option on some Classic Walking weeks

A typical Classic Walking day…

… will offer you a choice of 2 or 3 guided walks, each of varying length and ascent. If you are new to walking, start at the easier level, where the pace is the gentlest. We have plenty of stops to enjoy the views and to rest. As your holiday progresses you may feel confident to try a more challenging level, or stick to the same level - it's entirely your choice.

Where you'll stay
Nether Grange

You'll be based in our fine Country House accommodation, Nether Grange, in the quiet harbour village of Alnmouth, in the Northumberland Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Historic Nether Grange occupies a wonderful position in the quiet harbour village of Alnmouth. From the elevated croquet lawn and terrace you can enjoy sweeping views across the golf links to the sea. The building began life as a granary and, in its current guise as a comfortable Country House, has 29 bedrooms, mostly en-suite, retaining much of its old character. With a peaceful atmosphere and beautiful unspoilt coastline to enjoy, a relaxing stay is assured.
